![]() ![]() If you've played through any of the previous games, there's nothing that feels new or fresh enough to make it a must-play. But the big question is, is this worth playing in 2020? There are also extra side missions to get stuck into, giving the Deluxe version a bit more beef than the original. Calling your Pikmin hoping they make it back in time is tense, because if they're not home before sundown they get got by all sorts of nasty creatures! It's nice to finish a hard day's work, then have a natural point at which you can put down the game and go do something else for a bit. This is also helped along by the way the game is divided into days, which gives you a set amount of time to complete tasks before you need to rush home to your ship. Slowly opening up new areas as you meet new Pikmin with different abilities, or collecting material to build bridges - there's a great sense of progression and discovery. Little improvements like this mean you can focus on exploring, which is where the game shines. It made for snappy and exact gameplay that felt satisfying. The game now offers hints - though I often found these weren't that useful - and lock on targeting to help you throw your Pikmin in the right direction. Pikmin 3 Deluxe also has a more relaxed pace than the original game, and a few changes to take the pressure off. You know, I think I'd feel bad for tossing them around like that if it weren't for the cute sounds they make while flying through the air. Throwing little colourful plant people to open pathways, fight monsters, and collect fruit still feels fun and silly. There's a reason this series was beloved when it was first released. Yet once I got past all these issues and got more stuck into the meat of the game, Pikmin remains really solid, charming, and playful. I only ever played a little bit of the original series, but even I could tell that not much has changed. The way that characters over explain everything that's happening, and data files that flash repetitive information on screen, feels really tedious in 2020. It looks old, with chunky menus and somewhat dated graphics. And that feels fair to say of quite a bit of this game. Still, it feels like a missed opportunity, because what should've been a standout part of this port is just a little under baked. This isn't coop, it's more like, "One person plays the game and the other person can control a character that has no impact"-op! But thankfully as the game opens up there are opportunities for proper cooperative play, and there's also some coop mini games to have fun with. It was just a split screen of both players playing the same story mission independently. I love good couch coop, and to me it's one of the most exciting new features of the Deluxe edition! But once I got there I was pretty disappointed. Upon booting up the game I was excited to jump into the new coop mode. It's all fruit you'd be used to seeing back here on Earth, but with much funnier names. You do this by sending handfuls of tiny Pikmin to carry oversized fruit back to your ship. The main story has you shipwrecked on the Pikmin's home planet, trying to gather food to feed your home planet. Just like a healthy diet, you'll need a good balance of different colours to move forward in the game, and a whole lot of fruit! Using the right Pikmin allows you to move into new areas and defeat enemies. For example, rock Pikmin are good for smashing through crystals, while yellow Pikmin can safely conduct electricity and let you complete electrical circuits. Each colour of Pikmin also has different skills. With a blow of your whistle you can control groups of Pikmin - little colourful creatures with adorable leaves and flowers on their heads. Now the game has come to Switch with a few extra add ons in Pikmin 3 Deluxe. ![]() It's time to pick some petite plant people in Pikmin 3 Deluxe!įirst released on the Wii U in 2013, Pikmin 3 was a delightful game about exploring an alien planet in search of fruit with the help of adorable planty people named Pikmin. ![]()
